Breastfeeding is one of the most natural thing in the world, and more importantly, something which is essential for a new born baby's survival. And yet, a woman breastfeeding in public is the recipient of creepy stares and rude looks.
And exactly such reprehensible behavior is what Malyalam magazine Grihalakshmi is calling out, through their bold cover.
The cover has the image of a woman breastfeeding, along with the statement, "Mothers tell Kerala, "please don't stare, we need to breastfeed"".
Malayalam magazine Grihalakshmi, from @mathrubhumieng, has this new cover. It says, "Mothers tell Kerala, "please don't stare, we need to breastfeed"".WOW. Unusually bold. pic.twitter.com/Nwz6nAF0Fk— Vivek S Nambiar (@ivivek_nambiar) February 28, 2018
Not only is the cover completely on point, it has sparked quite a positive reaction on Twitter.
All the outrage points exactly to what the cover aims to highlight. The stigma associated with (feeding) breasts being seen publicly has to stop. #breastfeeding— Ardra Balachandran (@ardramaanasam) February 28, 2018
Malayalam magazine is bold to have this cover page. Translation - Do not stare at us while we are breastfeeding. pic.twitter.com/08jDXDKxSF— santhosh babu (@hypnobaba) February 28, 2018
Bold & beautiful..Outstanding way of getting across a message.Remember Ram Teri Ganga Maili where the chief protagonist Mandakini was shown breastfeeding her child on the big screen that was a first and this is too. Need to send message across.— Ajay K. Pathak. (@tirol2001) February 28, 2018
Quite brilliant and very relevant 👌👍— Subhash Pais (@Subhash_ati9) February 28, 2018
But amidst the positive reactions, there were obviously few people who completely missed the point and inadvertently proved why we need more such covers and discussions.
Such a sexualised cover. Doubt many mothers feel so good or glamourous while breastfeeding...— Shil (@ShilMuscat) February 28, 2018
What's wrong in watching a breastfeeding woman and getting sexually motivated?— Sidharthan (@skapilavastu) February 28, 2018
Wear shoes instead of carpeting whole earth. No?Atleast until overall national character can be trusted.😬— DeepJyoti (@Shishyoham) February 28, 2018
This is clearly a bold cover, and people's reaction to it prove, that it's important to normalize something as natural as breastfeeding.
