Sensible dialogue about menstruation in India is about as rare as it gets. Apart from a few hurried classes in school, most Indian men have learnt about it through the school of life, and much later than they should have. Periods are taboo here, and us guys mostly had extremely hazy and oftentimes ridiculous misconceptions about what happens during ‘that time of the month’.

It might be funny, but the lack of information about periods points to a much deeper problem. The taboo surrounding menstruation and periods and period blood needs to go. A natural bodily function can’t hold sway over a modern mindset, and it needs to start in schools itself, as is apparent.
