Bearded men are considered the epitome of being attractive. But it turns out, growing beards does more than just add to vanity. Science says it’s even healthier.

According to a study, beards also protect you from UV rays.

The study was conducted by researchers of University of Queensland, who took mannequins with varying amount of thickness of beards. Each mannequin was then exposed to the sun after which they measured the radiation levels absorbed by each mannequin.

It was found that having a beard can protect men from 90-95 per cent of harmful UV rays with a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) of up to 21.

Lead author, Professor Parisi explained in the study,

“While beards will never be as sun-safe as sunscreen, they certainly are a factor in blocking UV rays.”

And come on, how often will someone really use a sunscreen? Growing a beard is the answer to it all.

While reducing exposure to the sun, beards also consequently help in slowing down the process of ageing.

According to Dr Adam Freidmann,

“Sun exposure is the primary cause of photo-ageing and skin damage so it makes sense that if your face is covered by a heavy beard, it may well protect your skin from the signs of ageing.”

So, you mean, no wrinkles?

A dermatologist told The Independent, that this indeed meant fewer wrinkles and a reduction in age spots found on the face. In fact it also provides protection from skin cancer.

It was mentioned that growing slight stubble may not be enough as the density of the beard matters, the more the hair, the better the protection.

Here’s hoping for more… hair.
