Two passengers were caught with gold worth around Rs 26 lakh that was concealed in slippers at Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi.

The two passengers had allegedly hidden 938 gm of gold in cut pieces between the sole and another layer of rubber inside the slipper, reports The Times of India

The passengers, who were both Indian nationals were arriving from Bangkok in a Thai airways flight.

Customs officials at the airport claimed that security check at airports has tightened post demonetisation. They also claimed that passengers are finding innovative ways to smuggle gold and cash into the country.

Last year, there were instances where people had tried concealing gold in baby diapers, bra and even papaya. In 2016, the customs department had seized 220 kilos of gold worth Rs. 60 crore.
