Sexist outbursts from our politicians are nothing new.

In yet another casual display of sexism, a 77-year-old BJP MP from Chhattisgarh, Bhansi Lal Mahato has been caught on camera remarking that Chhattisgarh girls are now becoming “tana-tan”

Mahto was addressing a wrestling competition for women, where he compared the girls from Mumbai and Kolkata to those in Korba in Chhattisgarh and made this derogatory comment.

He said: “State sports minister Bhaiyalal Rajwade often tells me that now there is no need for girls from Mumbai and Kolkata. Turis (girls, in Chhattisgarhi dialect) from Korba and girls of Chhattisgarh are now becoming tana-tan.”

The comment has triggered an outrage across the state, and opposition parties have jumped into demand a public apology from the MP. Chhattisgarh Janata Congress MLA Amit Jogi has said, “This is condemnable. He has disappointed us. He is not a shram (Labour) minister, but a besharam (shameless) minister.”

This is not the first time ministers have made such unsavoury remarks. From PM Modi to Digvijaya Singh, our leaders have time and again indulged in making such crass comments.

Mahato’s unwanted comment has the Twitter fuming:
