After the Supreme Court’s disapproval of wastage of food and water at lavish wedding functions in the Capital, the Delhi government has drafted a policy regarding the curtailment of social events in the city.

The Delhi government had formed a four-member committee that included principal secretary, urban development; principal secretary, health; chief executive officer, Delhi Jal Board; and member secretary, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, to draft the social function policy.

The policy is developed with the intention of putting a cap on the number of guests that can attend the functions, depending on the size of the venue.

This will be determined by dividing the square metre area of the venue by 1.5 or multiplying total number of cars that can be parked by four.

The policy also states that all leftover food should be given away to the underprivileged. The venue should also have enough provisions to ensure that there is no traffic congestion.

According to the policy, there will be no horse-drawn carriage and band right outside the venue, no firearms and the DJ sets will have to abide by the noise pollution limit.

Reports suggest that the policy will be implemented as early as this month.

In regard to not abiding by these norms set by the government, hefty penalties have been laid down for the owner of the venue.

It is Rs 5 lakh for the first offence, Rs 10 lakh for the second and Rs 15 lakh for the third and any subsequent offence. The third offence will also invite cancellation of the licence after a buffer period of 30 days. Hosting of any such event at a place not authorised or approved will invite a penalty of Rs 15 lakh and sealing of the premises.
