In a gruesome incident, a 25-year-old woman was set on fire by a man for turning down his marriage proposal. The incident happened in northwest Delhi’s Mukundpur area on Saturday when the accused Abhishek went with his friends Vijay, Karan and a few others to the victim’s house and started beating her relatives.

“Twenty to twenty-five men came and started beating us with rods. Abhishek’s four-five uncles were also there and his friends as well. Abhishek started threatening the girl but she refused to marry him. He then poured kerosene on her, set her on fire and ran away,” a victim’s relative told ANI News adding that Abhishek had been troubling the victim for the past few days.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the woman, who suffered 70% burns, was admitted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital by her family members. However, her condition worsened and she was later to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital in central Delhi where her condition is said to be critical.

Delhi Police have arrested the accused Abhishek, his brother Karan and their uncle, Vijay. A case under sections 323 (hurt), 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (house trespass) and 34 (common intention) of IPC has been registered against them at the Bhalswa Dairy police station. 

According to a report by Times Now, Abhishek, who is her neighbour, had been pressurising the girl and her family for marriage. A few days ago, her brother approached the accused’s family to confront the matter which led to a minor scuffle.
