In another horrific incident of reckless driving in the national capital, a 21-year-old BBA student killed two people and injured one person badly when he rammed into them at Janakpuri’s C4E market area on Monday morning.

The accused, identified as Rishabh Rawat, is a student of Indraprastha University and was found to be very drunk when finally caught. The alcohol level in Rawat’s body was 159 mg, while the permissible level is only 30 mg, reports The Indian Express. 

A CCTV camera captured Rawat’s speeding Honda City slamming hard into his third victim, Ashwini Anand, who was thrown against a car parked by the road and landed about 20 metres behind it.

Anand’s son-in-law told The Indian Express, 

“I was appalled on seeing the CCTV footage. This is not an accident, this is cold-blooded murder.”

Rawat had reportedly been drinking all night at a house in the Shiv Nagar area and was heading back home in his car at around 6 am. 

He took a U-turn near the Tihar Jail at a high speed and started zigzagging where he rammed into Kameshwar Prasad near Gate 4 of the jail complex. Prasad was thrown against a tree and then hit a wall, reported The Times of India.

Eyewitnesses immediately alerted a constable, who was patrolling on a bike. He signaled Rawat to stop but the latter ignored him and made another U-turn. He then ran over another man, Santosh, who was cleaning cars in a residential area. Santosh’s abdomen and a leg were crushed by the car. 

Even these two hit-and-runs didn’t slow him down as headed towards Surajmal College on the wrong side of the road and hit Anand. 

The constable finally managed to overtake Rawat after chasing him for 15 minutes, and blocked the road with his bike.

Both Prasad (40) and Anand (67), who were on their morning walks, died on the spot, while Santosh was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where doctors said he is in critical condition.

Police found bottles of liquor inside the car. When they asked Rawat to accompany them to Janakpuri police station, he refused at first and then reportedly told them to get compensation for the victims from his father, reports NDTV .

Police also added that Rawat drove at a speed of over 100 kmph over the 1.5-km stretch. They have registered a case at Janakpuri West police station and booked him for causing death by negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder, the NDTV report said.

The car, registered in Rawat’s name, was gifted to him in December 2015 by his father, who runs a hardware store in Janakpuri.
