There have been stories of outstanding heroism that have emerged as the flood waters begin to recede in Chennai. Like that of Mohamed Yunus, a man who is being credited with saving a couple and being rewarded with the family naming their newborn after him.

Here’s the post that Mohamed Yunus shared on Facebook that has been going viral:

Yunus, the CEO of a start-up, had been hearing of people seeking help across Chennai and decided to do something himself. He reportedly shelled out Rs 1 lakh of his own money to hire boats to rescue people stranded at various locations in Chennai.

Among those he rescued was Chitra, a resident of the Urapakkam locality, who was pregnant and stranded at her home with her husband. The couple was stranded in their home with the woman expected to deliver delivery of her baby in two days.

Yunus told the The New Indian Express that they found the couple in neck-deep water and discovered Chitra was pregnant and expected to deliver in days only when they pulled her onto a boat.

“She was under panic, especially after the boat almost toppled when it hit a uprooted tree. I told a story that conveyed a message that money is nothing but a piece of paper until it helps someone,” he told the newspaper.

The woman was taken safely to a hospital in the Perungalathur area of the city, where she delivered a healthy baby girl on December 5.
