These findings were revealed in a survey of employees across 17 countries conducted by Ipsos for furniture and workspace systems company Steelcase Inc. 

The other countries with high levels of employee satisfaction are Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa.

The most dissatisfied are the French. Only 5 per cent of the workers surveyed in France said they were highly engaged and satisfied with their companies and workplaces.

The study found that more than one-third of workers in 17 of the world’s most important economies don’t find their jobs engaging. While the global average for dissatisfaction is 11 per cent, only 4 per cent Indian employees said they were highly dissatisfied with their workplace.

Indians overwhelmingly rank as the most engaged and satisfied among those included in this study. They are happy to go to work, value their company culture and feel a sense of connection with their colleagues. They describe their offices as innovative, states the report.

One of the reasons for the high employee satisfaction could be that 70 per cent of the country’s surveyed workers occupy either a private or shared private office at work. Culturally, having a workspace of one’s own, even if it is compact and modest, is a signal of belonging and importance, which may explain the overall high degree of workplace satisfaction.

Another important reason is that Indian workplaces are adequately equipped with shared spaces, such as meeting rooms and cafeterias. Also, employees have the most access to sports or exercise facilities—43 per cent compared to 22 per cent globally. 

In fact, Indian offices got the highest scores in the study by the employees for the facilities that they offer.
