Indrani Mukherjea, along with 200 other inmates on Sunday was booked for rioting inside the Byculla prison in Mumbai against the mysterious death of a fellow prisoner. 

The prisoners staged a protest against the alleged murder of 31-year old convict Manjula Shetye on Friday who was serving a life term since 2005 for the murder of her sister-in-law, reported TOI.   

An FIR has also been filed against six women prison staffers, including a jailor for allegedly thrashing the deceased that ultimately lead to her death. A case of murder has been registered against the suspects by the Nagpada Police. 

“We have registered a murder case and are yet to record statements of the people concerned with the case,” TOI quoted Inspector Pandurang Sanas from Nagpada police as saying. 

According to TOI, the women inmates has claimed that Shetye suffered a heart attack after being beaten up by few jail officers. As she collapsed in the women’s inmate barrack number 5, no medical aid was provided either. 

She was later rushed to JJ Hospital where Dr T P Lahane, Dean at JJ Hospital confirmed her brought dead. 

“One lady inmate of Byculla prison died at JJ Hospital. Inmates alleged that she was beaten by a lady staffer. Due to this, there was a commotion among inmates. Jail staff along with police tried to pacify them after the incident,” Indian Express quoted Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) as saying.

Indrani Mukherjea, who is currently serving a jail term for killing her daughter Sheena Bora, climbed up the jail’s terrace along with 200 other inmates and staged a protest. The protesters set papers, books and clothes on fire, following which a case of rioting and criminal conspiracy was booked against them.
