Recently, a post on FB urging people to storm into Area 51 went viral, all over social media. The post calls for a public invasion of secret Air Force-run facility near Groom Lake on 20th September at 3 am which has been the subject of alien conspiracy theories for decades. Right now, the page currently has 1.6 million users who say they are “going” to storm Area 51 while, on the other hand, about 1.2 million people said they are “interested” in going.

Well, a guy named Matty Roberts was responsible for starting the frenzy over Area 51. And he is a little concerned about his alien-inspired joke spinning out of control.

In an interview with Las Vegas station KLAS-TV, Roberts said, ‘Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us’ started as a joke and it is not actually intended to rally conspiracy theorists to storm the ‘secret’ government facility in southern Nevada.”

Roberts never thought that his joke would get out of control and become a viral meme, to an extent that even the Air Force would get involved. Phew! Pretty intense.

Roberts says, “I posted it on, like, June 27, and it was kind of a joke. And then it waited for like, three days, like 40 people, and then it just completely took off, out of nowhere. It’s pretty wild.”

He says he got the idea of starting the movement after listening to an interview with Bob Lazar, a conspiracy theorist who thinks the government is hiding UFOs and aliens in the Nevada desert.

“I just thought it would be a funny idea for the meme page,” he said. “And it just took off like wildfire. It’s entirely satirical though, and most people seem to understand that.”

After his post went viral, Roberts was concerned about the FBI showing up at his door step. And, with the target date coming closer, the plan to storm Area 51 has now become a memeable movement.

It looks like the people are quite serious about going ahead with the mission. An alien-themed hotel and the Alamo Inn on Highway 93 are all booked up for September 20 so we don’t know if that’s just coincidence or people have already made their plans.

It’ll be interesting to see how things turn out. Tell us if you would like to storm Area 51 and meet an alien (if it exists).
