Most women in India would admit to having been flashed or shown lewd and inappropriate gestures by men in public spaces without recourse.
But this time around things were different. Recently, a man flashed at a 23-year-old woman and touched her inappropriately inside an ATM kiosk in Mumbai.
The woman shared the entire incident on social media.
The incident happened in Mulund (East) when the woman stopped by an ATM late night to withdraw money. There were some issues in the machine dispensing money.
This is when the accused Sandeep Khumbharkar offered to help her in paying off the rickshaw driver. She politely declined the offer and tried withdrawing the money once again.
This time, the accused touched her inappropriately and flashed at her. He freaked out and fled when the woman started recording the entire incident.
She immediately approached the police outside the ATM and they were successful in nabbing the accused.
Akhilesh Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of police, said, “The police officers chased the accused for a kilometre before nabbing him.”
The accused has been taken into custody and was charged under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) 354 (A) (making sexually coloured remarks, shall be guilty of the offence of sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
