Opposition parties are unanimously taking on on HRD minister Smriti Irani. All of them including the Congress, KC Tyagi of JD(U) and Mohammad Salim of CPI(M) will be moving a privilege motion against Smriti on Monday for ‘misleading’ the house over the Rohith Vemula suicide, reports Zee News.
Congress leader Mukul Wasnik said. “The Union Minister has not only been economical with the truth but has also wilfully misled Parliament on the unfortunate suicide of a young Dalit student,” reports The Hindu Business Line.
Speaking to BusinessLine, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury disclosed that he will be approaching the Lok Sabha speaker for breach of privilege of members.
Rohith Vemula’s mother on Friday accused Union HRD minister Smriti Irani of resorting to “blatant lies” in Parliament about her son’s suicide. “Life imprisonment” will not be enough for her and others responsible for his death, Radhika Vemula said.
With her son Raja, beside her, Ms Vemula said the BJP would be “decimated” if Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not take any action against Ms Irani and minister Bandaru Dattatreya who had written multiple letters to her seeking action against Rohith for alleged anti-national activities.
The opposition was up in arms in the Rajya Sabha on Friday over Smriti Irani reading out the ‘blasphemous’ statements regarding goddess Durga from a pamphlet allegedly written by Jawaharlal Nehru University students. They also demanded an apology from the HRD minister but Smriti Irani didn’t budge.
