A teenage girl student of a government school was allegedly raped by a middle-aged man suspected to be a drug addict at Children’s Traffic Park in Sector 23 of Chandigarh on Tuesday morning, reports The Tribune.

The police has registered a case under different sections of the Indian Penal Code and begun scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity of the children’s park.

The incident took place soon after Independence Day celebrations got over at the girl’s school in Sector 23 and she was on her way home. She was walking past the Children’s Traffic Park when she was accosted just about 1.5 kms away from home, reports Network 18.

According to initial reports, the girl told her family about the crime when she reached home who called the police. She was then taken to the local hospital for a medical examination.

According to India Today, police sources said that the accused is a 40-year-old unidentified man who escaped after molesting the girl.

The minor’s rape comes just days after women in the city directly administered by the Union Home Ministry held a candle-light march to assert their right to access public spaces without having to worry about their safety.
