While the world was commemorating International Women’s Day, a woman was brutally gangraped inside a moving bus in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district and her infant was killed.

The incident took place in the Shishgarh police station area in Bareilly district on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday, when the victim, a resident of Khajuria village in Rampur, boarded a private bus with her child at Shahi for Shishgarh on her way to Rampur.

When other passengers alighted at the Shishgarh bus stand, the conductor and driver of the bus allegedly gangraped the woman. They also flung the infant to the ground, where he sustained grievous injuries, resulting in his instant death, the Indian Express reported.

She was later thrown off the bus by the accused.

The victim was found the next morning on the road when her husband along with villagers came searching for her, The Times of India reported.

The bus conductor and helper have been arrested and booked under IPC Sections 376-D (gangrape) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), according to the Indian Express.

Talking to the Times of India, superintendent of police (rural areas) Yamuna Prasad said:

We have arrested the bus driver and conductor identified as Ishwari Lal and Pannu. They have been charged under section 376 D (gang rape) and 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Indian Penal Code and sent to jail.

Prasad said that the woman lodged a police complaint on Tuesday morning, after which an FIR was registered and the accused persons were arrested. The woman has been sent for medical examination, he added. The infant’s autopsy report is awaited.
