The internet is full of DIY videos where people are teaching amazing new things like how to decorate your home or how to revamp your wardrobe using old clothes. They’re interesting, help in saving money and are incredibly creative.
But one programmer has pulled off a feat you may not have imagined even in your wildest dreams.
Scotty Allen has uploaded a video on YouTube where he can be seen building a 16 GB iPhone 6S right from scratch. No kidding!
A software engineer, Allen worked at Google for two years on web search. For the last 3 years, he’s been travelling and lives in Shenzhen, China. He surveyed the public cell phone parts markets of Huaqiangbei in China and bought all the parts required to build an iPhone. He handpicked everything separately, even got some parts customized and meticulously put them all together!
But why’d he do that? Talking to Chris Matyszczyk of CNET, he says:
“You know the thrill of walking down a back alley in hopes you might find something amazing? I f***ing live for that.”
And how much money did he spend on building an iPhone?
You probably won’t care because it’s way cheaper than what one pays to buy an iPhone! Allen, however, ended up losing a lot of money because this was his first attempt!
As he says in the video:
“I spent well over $1,000, but a lot of that was parts and tools I didn’t end up needing. I’d say it’s probably around $300 worth of parts in the actual phone,” he said.
