Former president of the UEFA and head of European football, Michel Platini has been arrested by the French police over his decision to award the hosting rights of 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

Platini who has captained the French national team in the past was detained by the police today in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris.

According to the Independent, his arrest was part of the investigation into corruption surrounding how the 2022 World Cup rights were awarded to Qatar.

The 63-year old had been banned from football for 6 years in 2016, which was later reduced to four after appealing the sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

His ban had expired earlier this year in March but the investigators in the fight against corruption in football have arrested him as part of the case.
