After a long week of excruciating work at the office, we look forward to the blessed weekend. For most of us, that just means a whole lot of beer. There is no greater feeling than sitting with your friends with a chilled pint or a tower of beer while you rant about anything you can think of. Point is, beer plays a pretty important role in some lives.
Everyone has their preferences for the beer brand they like to gulp down. And then there’s this one. We doubt that this brand would have any takers at all for it. Why, you ask? Because it’s made from human piss. Yes, you heard that right. They call it ‘Sewer to Brewer.’
The machine collects urine in a large tank. It is then heated using a solar-powered boiler. The heated urine is then passed through a membrane, separating out the water, as well as nutrients such as potassium, nitrogen and phosphorous. The nutrients can be used as fertilisers and the water recycled can be used to brew beer.
The team of scientists at Ghent University claims that their technique could be applied in rural areas and developing countries. This energy-efficient machine can work even in the areas with no electricity.
According to a report in Daily Mail, Sebastiaan Derese, who was associated with the device, said
We’re able to recover fertilizer and drinking water from urine using just a simple process and solar energy.
We all know how much we pee after having beer, this could be a really good recycling system
The team used the slogan #PeeForScience and deployed the machine at a 10-day music and theatre festival in central Ghent. People happily volunteered and now from their pee, the scientists have collected 1,000 liters of recycled water. This will now be used in making one of Belgium’s most prized possession – beer.
We don’t know if this machine will ever come to India, but I am sure gonna read the ingredients while having any Belgian beer ever.
