They say the ideal age to visit the gynecologist is between 13 to 15 but even if you haven’t visited the doctor and you’re much older, don’t fret. You can always book an appointment and have yourself checked right away. 

2. You don’t need to feel awkward or uncomfortable.

Gynaecologists deal with people’s genitals on a daily basis and it’s anything but awkward for them. It is perfectly normal for you to feel uncomfortable the first time, but it is for your own good. Remember, it is purely for medical and health reasons and it’s the doctor’s job to do so. 

3. Take someone along for support.

It is always a good idea to take someone along like a family member or a close friend who has prior experience with gynaecologists when you go to one for the first time. Having company will offer you the support you could need and make things easier for you.

4. Honesty is the best policy.

It might be the first time for you but gynaecologists are used to hearing all kinds of stories from their patients. Keeping your doctor in the loop about your sexual life, menstruation cycle and everything else is extremely important. Don’t shy away from sharing everything with your doctor because your health is what should come first.

5. Gynaecologists don’t care about how you look ‘down there’.

Whether you are shaved, waxed or have a full-grown bush in your hoo-haa, always remember that gynaecologists do not care about the appearance at all — they’ve seen it all already. 

6. Keep your hygiene in check.

Not having to shave or wax does not mean that you can take it easy on hygiene as well. Make sure to clean your private parts propery before visiting a gynaecologist.

7. The doctor is sworn to confidentiality.

If you are over the age of 18, the doctor is bound to keep all your information to herself/himself and you don’t have to worry about your personal life being shared with anyone else. Anyone below 18 years will need a guardian to accompany them and the doctor will have to keep them updated.

8. External genital exam is a common thing.

The doctor will ask you to expose your vaginal area to her/him. The test includes the doctor taking a look at your vaginal opening, which includes the labia, vulva, clitoris, and anus. Do not feel uncomfortable and remember that the vagina is like any other part of your body and needs proper medical care.

9. If your doctor tells you take some tests, do your research.

The gynaecologist might ask you to take some tests, given it’s your first time. Do proper research before agreeing for anything and don’t shy away from taking the tests. Your body is your temple and vaginal health is very sensitive and needs to be taken care of at all times.

10. Your period will not stop you from visiting a gynaecologist.

If you have your period when the appointment is scheduled, you can still go ahead with the visit. It might be a better idea to reschedule if it isn’t anything urgent but don’t cancel if it’s an emergency.

11. Be curious. Ask as many questions as you want to.

Do not shy away from asking whatever questions that are on your mind. The doctor is there to take care of you and will clear out any doubts that you might have.
