There’s a hero inside of everyone and no, I am not saying that just to make you feel good. The best thing I can come up with is that heroism is doing something where you’re really taking risks to help somebody else, and you’re not expecting anything to gain from that risk. Here’s one such woman who defied all odds to help an army man.
A Shimla resident, Veena Sharma saved a soldier’s life who had plunged into a 50-foot-deep roadside. She is a 42-year-old homemaker and is certainly no less than a hero for us.
On August 20, a group of soldiers belonging to Assam rifles were training at Jutogh Cantt. While training, they came across a hostile canine tribe at Banuti area, around 12 km from Shimla. As soon as the dogs started approaching the soldiers, Mukesh Kumar fell into a 50-foot-deep roadside pit, hit his head on a stone and went unconscious. As the soldiers started calling out for help, Veena Sharma, a local, hurriedly arrived at the location and revived him by performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. She said to The Times of India –
Finding no other way to shift the injured man, I called my 72-year-old father Ramesh Sharma, who rarely drives these days, to bring the car. Since none of the soldiers knew how to drive, it was left to my father to transport the injured soldier to Jutogh military hospital.
Mukesh Kumar was then admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Shimla, and is now well and fine. Taking note of her valour, Assam Rifles commanding officer honoured her with a memento and an appreciation letter. Needless to say, what Veena Sharma did is a perfect example of unparalleled courage. Kudos to her!
