“Honesty is the best policy.” – Benjamin Franklin

I’m pretty sure that Benjamin Franklin was not doing a 9-5 when he came up with this brilliant proverb that can, quite easily, destroy your career. I mean, think about it. Imagine yourself uttering nothing but the truth while you’re at work, especially in front of your boss. Try saying that the reason why you need an off is because you’re pulling an all-nighter with your friends and not because you have a doctor’s appointment. Better yet, say that he/she was nothing more than a headless chicken in the last meeting. Or say, “I’m sorry but your out-of-box ideas, for the lack of a better word, SUCK!” And then just wait. Wait for your boss to fire the hell out of you.

Truth is, no matter what you do, you can never reveal your true self in front of your bosses. And more often than not, you are caught in situations wherein you might say something but, deep down you are thinking something completely different.

1. When your boss is explaining a not-so-earth-shattering idea.

2. When you have to convince him why you won’t be able to work on a… SUNDAY!

3. When your boss says, “This is a start-up. Here, you will learn everything.”

4. When your boss asks you to remind him about a conference call with a client.

5. When your boss refuses to give you the long-pending appraisal because the company is struggling financially.

6. When your boss says, “Iss idea mein feel nahin ayi.”

7. When your boss presents the same idea that you’d suggested, but takes all the credit for it.

8. When your boss asks you to stay after 7:00 PM… on a Friday!

9. When your boss cracks a not-so-funny joke in front of the entire team.

10. When your boss asks you for feedback and then completely ignores it.

11. When you are on a vacation and your boss asks you to make an urgent presentation for him.

12. When your boss asks you to reach office an hour earlier and then reaches two hours late himself because he got stuck in “traffic.”
