I have talked to myself enough times for people to have called me crazy. And if you’re the observant kinds, you might have seen other people talking to themselves while travelling, or just looking into space, gazing and talking to themselves. But hey! Even Albert Einstein spoke to himself. While we are quick to judge people with such eccentricity, it turns out that it is not only perfectly normal but also a sign of being a genius!

According to a study published in The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, psychologists Daniel Swigley and Gary Lupya hypothesized that talking to yourself is actually beneficial. Now that’s pretty awesome, right? Oh, and they shared many other benefits as well.

Talking to yourself will make your brains work more efficiently

When you talk to yourself, you’re reinforcing the thoughts, which sparks your memory. This exercise leads to better brain functioning, and helps you stay smart and sharp.

Talking to yourself helps you find what you need

While conducting the study, psychologists asked people to find two things in a supermarket. In the first set of the experiment, participants were asked to stay silent while searching for the objects. In the second set, they were asked to say aloud the name of the object while searching for it. This resulted in them finding the object quicker, the second time around.

The study also found that talking to yourself helps organising your thoughts

Hearing yourself talk about things in your head will lead to better organization of the thousands of thoughts and ideas that are usually running wild in your brain. It helps clarify your thoughts, and priortise things in the correct order.

It also says that talking to yourself helps achieve your goals

Reinforcement of ideas and organization of thoughts will eventually help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
