We all have that one life-changing experience after which our lives are never the same again.

For Chandani Grover, a 14-year-old girl from Bhopal it was a tragic accident one year ago when she saw a stray pup run over by a car.

The incident was etched in her memory and she knew she had to do something about it. Talking to The Better India, Chandani said:

The incident opened my eyes to the reality of strays. I decided to never let a dog – stray, abandoned, or domestic pet – be harmed under my watch.

With an intention to protect stray dogs, she started looking for places that could help provide safe shelter to them.

When she came to know about the scarcity of shelter homes for animals in the city, she took upon herself the task of building one.

Chandani along with the help of her parents and three other people, established the Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Barkheda.

The shelter home is spread across an area of 15,000 sq ft and began functioning only three months ago.

As of now the shelter home only facilitates the boarding of rescued stray dogs and already houses 48 dogs.
