A week ago, we had published a story about people abandoning their huskies in large numbers and surprisingly the primary reason had been linked to Game of Thrones. GoT, back in 2011, introduced us to the concept of direwolves, a highly intelligent and larger species of wolves and the ferocious pets of House Stark. But just like the wolves in the show, real life huskies that look like them have been having a tough time.

People, bewitched by the fascination for the mythical creature, adopted Huskies in large numbers and when they could not take care of the beasts after it grew up a little, abandoned them in shelters.

GoT actor Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, along with PETA have pleaded with fans to not buy huskies because they resembled the direwolves, only to abandon them once they realise they cannot take care of them.

Hollywood Reporter quoted a statement by Dinklage, released by PETA saying, “Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these Huskies are being abandoned — as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs.”

The actor further warned that Huskies required care for their entire lives. They need constant grooming and exercise, he added. He requested people to make sure that there were up for such responsibilities if they wanted to bring one of these dogs into their family. Earlier, it had also been noticed that movies like 101 Dalmatians, Beverly Hilla Chihuahua, Legally Blonde and Men in Black had also impacted in a serious increase in the sales of the featured breeds who were later found abandoned in shelters.
