You may have heard this a million times: Millennials don’t know what they actually want, Gen Z would be lost without their phones and boomers are responsible for everything bad that is going on in the world. But, the question is: what’s up with these ‘generation’ tags anyway? Let’s find out.
An interesting fact is: This generation got its name because of the fact that there was a ‘baby boom’ after World War II. These people are behind 80% of all luxury travel spending.
The term ‘Gen X’ comes from Douglas Coupland’s novel, ‘Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture,’ which was published in 1991. Gen X is also known as the ‘MTV generation’. Born after the boomers, these people saw a great rise in the music genres like hip-hop and indie. They grew up in the time when the technology was advancing but wasn’t exactly available for use. So, this generation has seen both the digital and non-digital worlds.
3. Millennials or Gen Y: People born between 1981 – 1996
Here comes the most popular generation in today’s time, ‘The Millennials’. Coined by Neil Howe and William Strauss in 1991, this generation is often described as ‘lazy’ and irresponsible about money. They are the first generation who witnessed new technology that is ubiquitous today. However, they are severely impacted by recession and unemployment.
This generation got its name following the names of its previous generations – like Gen X and Gen Y (popularly known as Millennials). This generation was born with technology. Although there’s a slight overlap between Millennials and Gen Z, Gen Z tends to be more knowledgeable about technology and social media. This group is super young and they don’t know how life would be without tech, which is why they are sometimes called the ‘iGen’.
