Delhi is serious about its food. So when a politician proposed a ban on one of its favourite street food, momos, the entire capital sat up and took notice. We had some fun at their expense too. But when it comes to giving a reply, the capital city has never backed down. And here again they’ve found a unique way to voice their protest against the bizarre proposal, by organising a momo-eating competition.

Anubhav from Delhi Food Walks told ScoopWhoop,

We were going to organise the momo competition as a part of our Street Food Awards anyway, when this MLA gave this statement. We felt the need to protect our street food culture in Delhi, where momos have really evolved as a staple street food, and hence the competition.

The event is being organised by Delhi Food Walks and the venue of the competition is Dolma Aunty Momos at their Lajpat Nagar outlet. It will take place on Saturday, June 17 starting at 4 pm. You will have to register here, and there is also a Facebook event with most of the requisite information about the event.

Anubhav was also quoted as saying,

We have kept a registration fee of Rs 50 for each participant, so that only serious momo lovers enter the competition. Since Dolma Aunty’s steamed momos are really famous, we chose to only keep them. There will be both varieties for vegetarian and non-vegetarian participants, and the competition will entail who can eat the maximum number in under a minute.

He also added that the competition would entail them dividing the participants in an equal number of groups, after which every group winner would face the others. And the elimination would take place with every round. The winner will get a certificate and obviously the glory of being the undisputed momo champion in Delhi.

The last date for registration is Thursday, June 15. All you momo lovers, hurry!
