The trailer for Chhapaak, starring Deepika Padukone in the lead role, released today and it provides a harrowing, hard-hitting look at the reality of acid attacks in India.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film is inspired by the story of acid attack survivor and Stop Sale Acide campaigner Laxmi Agarwal.

It presents the story of a young girl Malti, who gets acid thrown on her. The gruesome attack leaves her with burns and scars across her face, but does not discourage her spirit – as she files a PIL against over-the-counter the sale of acid.

Deepika Padukone plays the lead role and she appears to nail the courage and determination it takes to fight the system for justice.

Vikrant Massey plays the role of Amol, an activist/journalist who meets and helps Malti and subsequently, falls in love with her.

The film focuses not just on the consequence of living as an acid attack survivor, but also on the courage it takes to once again ‘enjoy’ life.
