The list of contention for Oscar nominations is out and looks like our Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman stands a high chance of making India proud yet again.
The double Oscar winner AR Rahman has made it to the long list of contentions for nominations in both Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories of 89th Academy Awards for his outstanding music composition for Pele: Birth of a legend.
While the film will be competing with 145 others in the Best Original Score category, the song “Ginga” composed to celebrate Pele’s soccer legacy in the same film will be seen vying for the top award along with 91 others in the list of Original Song category.
According to the list of nominations released by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Rahman is seen competing with a long list of composers including Michael Giacchino for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Justin Hurwitz for “La La Land”.
Interestingly, Alex Heffes — who composed music for Indian filmmaker Mira Nair’s “Queen of Katwe”, is also included in both the categories for his compositions in the biographical sports drama film.
This is the third time when AR Rahman has been nominated twice and that too for the same categories at the Oscars. In 2011, he bagged double nomination in the same categories for his work in “127-Hours”.
In 2009, he won the top award for his work in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and for the song ‘Jai Ho‘ from the same film. Here’s a video of the moment of Rahman’s big win at Oscars in 2009:
While the nominations for the 89th Oscars will be announced on January 24 next year, the main ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 26, 2017.
