Alia Bhatt plays the role of Roop, a young girl married against her wishes, at the behest of her family. Consequently she apparently has an extra-marital affair with Zafar, played by Varun Dhawan.

Aditya Roy Kapoor plays the role of Dev Chaudhry, Roop’s husband who marries her out of duty but not love. He is apparently in love with Sonakshi – who plays the role of Satya – though it’s not clear what position she holds in the family. 

The movie also stars Sanjay Dutt as Balraj Chaudhry and Madhuri Dixit as Bahaar Begum, along with Kunal Khemu in a supporting appearance.  

Set against the backdrop of pre-independence, the movie hints at the partition riots, duty-bound marriages, and familial obligations. Or in millennial lingo, this is what an old era complicated relationship looks like.
