According to a Hindustan Times report, Jain had filed a police complaint in Versova against the director in 2004, accusing him of raping her 16 times.

The Times Of India report quoted an old statement of Preeti that the director asked her for sexual favours in return for a lead role in his film and that he raped her even after she refused the offer.

In 2005, the actress, as per the report, allegedly hired an aide of underworld gangster Arun Gawli for Rs 75,000 to kill Madhur Bhandarkar. But, Gawli’s lawyer reportedly informed the police about the conspiracy when Jain asked for a refund after a failed attempt.
In 2012, the rape case against the filmmaker was cancelled by a court after Preeti Jain told the court that she was dropping the charge.
