The trailer for Nandita Das’s Manto, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, has released and this is one biopic you definitely don’t want to miss.

Based on the life of writer Saadat Hasan Manto, the movie deals with Manto’s ideology as reflected in his writing, his alcohol addiction, and most importantly, his view of the partition that divided his life and writings into two cities – Bombay and Lahore.

From his diction to mannerisms, Nawazuddin Siddiqui brings alive the legendary writer on screen in a uniquely wonderful manner.

The manner in which he has nailed the role of a writer – a character he has never played before – is a clear indication of his talent as an actor.

Rasika Dugal, who plays the role of Manto’s wife Safia, also shines in her portrayal of the concerned wife.

Powerful imagery and well-scripted dialogues only add to the excellent talent on screen, that includes actors like Ranvir Shorey, Rishi Kapoor, Rajshri Deshpande, Tillotama Shome, Shashank Arora, Paresh Rawal, and Javed Akhtar, among others.

The trailer references many major turning points in Manto’s life, like the obscenity charges he faced for his stories, specifically his non-fiction story Thanda Ghosht (Cold Meat), and his decision to move from Bombay to Lahore after the partition.

Written and directed by Nandita Das, the trailer has definitely raised our expectations.
