Nominations for the Golden Globe Awards were announced recently, but no female director was included in the list.
This was the year when female directors gifted movies like The Farewell (Lulu Wang), Little Women (Greta Gerwig), Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria), Honey Boy (Alma Har’el), Clemency (Chinonye Chukwu) and others. And yet, no female director made the cut.
Consequently, people took to Twitter to comment about the same:
The last time a female director was nominated for a Golden Globe was in 2014 when Ava DuVernay was nominated for Selma!!! I can't even... pic.twitter.com/7mgk4ojGuE— Nora Dominick (@noradominick) December 9, 2019
Golden Globe thoughts. I read a lot of these scripts. Saw the movies. I know the answer but here's a rhetorical question. Where in the hell are #Booksmart and #TheHustlers noms for female writing/directing? I know there's more but those for me stood out.— Guy who writes (@BogeyGuyC) December 9, 2019
ALSO, no female directors at all? Even this year, with Farewell, Little Women, Mr. Rogers, Hustlers, et cetera? https://t.co/hx2POdlxTd— Julia Turner (@juliaturner) December 9, 2019
Are you fucking kidding me with this fucking bullshit of having NO female writers nominated for a Golden Globe? And no female directors either?! You suck hard sometimes, Hollywood. Fucking catch up, Jesus— Marcelena Campos Mayhorn (@campmayhorn) December 9, 2019
Of course there were no female directors nominated for a Golden Globe. Of course Lupita was snubbed. Of course a man won country music's entertainer of the year. The patriarchy is scared... they have to maintain their dominance some how. pic.twitter.com/MWKLhAqAED— Ayrlia Welch (@AlwaysAyrlia) December 10, 2019
So they’re really gonna nominate Joker and Todd Philips and not Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers, Olivia Wilde for Booksmart, Greta Gerwig for Little Women or Céline Sciamma for Portrait of a Lady on Fire. You can not say the female talent wasn’t there. #GoldenGlobe pic.twitter.com/ZoibVecr5B— Lucy Burke (@_lucyburke) December 10, 2019
𝐓𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝: the lack of female Golden Globe nominees is sad bc they deserve such a 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 award— Chase Kolby (@chasekolby) December 10, 2019
𝐖𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝: we should question the validity of the Golden Globes if they’re going to continue to discredit amazing female creators who are clearly deserving
can we talk about how not a single female director was nomitaned for a golden globe— 🧚🏻♂️ (@imsweet4yuu) December 10, 2019
These Golden Globe noms are wack, and just further proof that these awards ceremonies are completely political, and financially influenced. Almost no people of color or female identifying people are nominated, despite incredible performances as actors or creators. #GoldenGlobe— Katya Kaminsky (@KatyaKaminsky) December 9, 2019
Neeee female directors nominated for a golden globe AGAIN wowwwwww unimpressed— Tomás Azócar-Nevin (@TomasAzocarN) December 9, 2019
Me trying to navigate my love for the Golden Globe nominations, but also my frustration with the lack of female writers and directors nominated pic.twitter.com/czTpHbBhfI— Danielle D’Amico (@daniellendamico) December 10, 2019
to anyone that says there isn’t a problem with inequality between men and women in hollywood explain how MULTIPLE films with amazing reviews all directed by women came out this year and yet not ONE female director was nominated for a golden globe pic.twitter.com/AFPRUhuaNt— 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞 ⎊ 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐭 (@sunsetpeter) December 10, 2019
No female directors nominated for Golden Globe? Utterly bonkers but sadly not that surprising! https://t.co/NWwPZqwk1k— Rachel Sheridan (@Sheridancasting) December 9, 2019
I try to keep it pretty positive over here butttttt this is an absolute tragedy and so discouraging. I realize award shows aren’t everything, but representation matters and there are so many women who have made incredible movies this year #GoldenGlobes https://t.co/6XaQ2SGlAC— Bethany Banks (@bethanyrbanks) December 9, 2019
Not a single female director being nominated for a Golden Globe is actually disgusting. There are so many legitimate candidates who made incredible films this year.— Jimmy Wong (@jfwong) December 9, 2019
not a SINGLE female director was nominated for a golden globe??? do the names lorene scafaria, greta gerwig, lulu wang, alma har’el, and olivia wilde mean NOTHING to y’all???— looking for my hallmark prince (@duel4duel) December 9, 2019
