Really, it’s high time we talk about this. I don’t have the best of times talking to new people, and I am sure there has to be a certain breed of those who love meeting all the new people they can, and yet have a hard time answering the question, “Oh my god, you haven’t seen this? But how could you have missed out on it? Everyone’s talking about it!” and the likes.
Well, guess what, I missed it. In fact, that new thing you’re talking about is not the only thing on popular television I missed. I have missed the oldest of news too. I have not seen the most iconic movies of all time, I have not seen the best work of the century either maybe, and my life is still going on, man.
What’s this pressure all about, anyway?
It’s entertainment, for the love of god! At least that’s how it used to be. It might a lot more than that for you, but not many of us out here. It’s funny how people so comfortably overstep boundaries and take it upon themselves to judge how every being on the planet should spend their time. I cannot find a polite enough way to say, mind your own business, maybe?
There are a gazillion things out there. Maybe you’re ignorant of some too?
We live in a world where Kardashians are aired live, there’s Big Boss, and I am sure a dozen others out there. I have absolutely nothing against anybody who enjoys the shows, they are immensely entertaining. But can we avoid the look of shocked drama when you meet people who are not too inclined towards them? Can we not be discriminated against as those who’ve been living under a rock? Where were you when they were teaching manners at school?
And some of us try to stay away from gadgets when we can.
As it goes, we keep coming back to the issue of ‘choice’. I cannot help but explain this like we’re all five – there exist a set of people who choose to set aside technology the moment they step into the comfort of their homes. There are those who choose to hit the gym, eat and sleep. There are those who choose to read. There are also those who while away staring into space. Leave them to do what they want in peace. Nobody’s entitled to invest time in what’s your idea of interesting.
Oh, and that tweet about your latest ‘watch’, very few care.
I understand the ‘spontaneous overflow of feelings’. We’ve all been overwhelmed by things at some point in our lives. But the rant, the appreciation, and the constant updates are almost like Netflix notifications, if there’s a section that nobody cares to look at. There’s also a live-action replay of the same when you meet people the next day. A polite suggestion is always welcome. But leading the whole conversation towards the awesomeness of what you saw is the recipe for How To Lose Friends And Alienate People in the real world. And sorry to pop the bubble, but your capacity to stay glued to your television/laptop – not a super power.
We’re just not interested in hypothetical, overdramatised projections of a future world.
Because frankly, I’d rather wait. As would many others I know. It’s happening right now, be it global warming, or technological advancements. This is the best time to live in. We don’t have artificial intelligence manning our life, we have the freedom to go where we want, we have electricity, we have the goddamn fucking internet! And many of us love this present and suck it up. We have no qualms about the way the horses of your imagination run, as long as you keep them off our field.
So go watch your shows. Indulge in all the movies you want. Or don’t. We’ve never called you out for making a nonsensical conversation about things that do not interest us. The least you can do maybe is return the favour, maybe? Because our source of entertainment, or lack thereof, is really not a matter of your concern.
Peace.
