While a few too many shots may make you dance and puke with equal abandon, taken in small doses, tequila actually has a few benefits, like these:

latintimes

1. Helps in digestion

We are not saying tequila is a health food. But tequila – especially if you consume the 100 % blue agave tequila – apparently helps in digestion because of the presence of inulin. Inulin, a natural storage carbohydrate, helps in the growth of good bacteria in the digestive system.

2. Comparatively low on carbs

A tequila shot is usually had neat, with salt and lime, unlike shots such as Jagerbombs that are accompanied with drinks high on sugar content.

3. Helps prevent dementia among the elderly

According to a study conducted in 2009, regular and moderate alcohol intake has health benefits for older adults. Be it a glass of wine, or a shot of tequila, it seems moderate intake might keep those brain cells running on high power for longer.

4. It even helps with weight-loss

According to a 2014 study, controlled intake of tequila can boost weight loss. This is due to the presence of a kind of sugar called agavins in tequila, that pass through the system unused.

5. It may help prevent diseases, such as osteoporosis and type-2 diabetes

Apparently agavins enhance calcium absorption. At the 247th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, a study reported that agavins, like other fructans, act as fiber and reportedly do not lead to spiked blood sugar levels.

While tequila is certainly not a guarantee against these diseases, moderate consumption may help the body become healthier.

6. Gluten-free!

We often scour through menu options in detail, especially if we have to avoid gluten. But when it comes to alcohol we either skip the drink or skip reading the ingredient list. Not with tequila. Made with the agave plant and not wheat or rice, tequila is 100% gluten-free.

7. Helps with insomnia

We are not talking about passing out! A small amount of tequila can reportedly help your body relax, and restrict restlessness. As a result, you may find it easier to sleep well through the night. But obviously, don’t develop a dependence on it.

8. It is actually probiotic

Probiotics – the healthy bacteria present in intestines – boost our body’s immune system. The fructans in tequila supply probiotics to the body, if consumed in small amounts.

This low-carb drink is perfect to start a night of partying, and apparently, even perfect for a night of lie-in! Plus, it helps that good quality tequila is known to give a less harsh hangover than most other drinks, especially other shots.
