The setting was Australia. Turia Pitt and Michael Hoskin met in school and fell in love. That was 5 years ago. They made plans: spending their lives together, have a great wedding, kids, everything that one would need for a happily ever after. Both Turia & Michael loved the outdoors and were incredibly fit. Their happy future together seemed imminent.
The story began like every love story does…
But then, tragedy struck.
In the September of 2011, Turia was trapped by a grassfire in a 100 km ultra-marathon in Kimberley. She suffered burns to 65% of her body and lost all the digits of her right hand. Turia spent 5 long months in the hospital with Michael by her side, encouraging her to never give up.
Michael deserves special mention. Because unlike most people, he didn’t let go when the going got tough. He gave up his job as a police officer so that he had all the time in the world to take care of his beautiful life partner.
“When Turia was in intensive care four years ago, I bought a diamond ring.”
“She’s got crazy energy. She loves the outdoors, she loves the ocean like I do and we were constantly active together.” Michael told AWW Magazine.
Turia also took to social media to share how lucky she was and told the world that Michael was the key to her survival.
She posted on Facebook, “Stoked to have this beautiful man in my life! You bring out the best in me and I can’t wait for the rest of our lives together.” And of course, he cooks too!
Everything was not as easy as it sounds.
“I’ve had to claw my way back into life — learn to walk, to talk. All the things I had taken for granted before became seemingly impossible tasks,” said Turia. But with the support of her family & friends, she has managed to overcome all adversities.
She is a true pioneer because ‘confidence equals beauty’.
Turia doesn’t want people to feel sorry for her. In fact, she believes she has quite an amazing life.
Their travels together are never ending.
“A lot of people find it kind of bizarre, but my life is incredible,” Turia once told ABC.
They faced a heap of hurdles that life put them through but came out on top.
And eventually, the couple are getting their happily ever after.
