While our taste in music keeps changing and (hopefully) progressing, there are some songs that define certain parts in our lives. These songs are almost like a rite of passage that people have to hear at different points of time.

College is when you’ll probably listen to some of these songs on repeat, whether it’s shared on earphones after class or halfway through a raucous party. Either way, check out the most seminal tracks every guy and girl has had in their playlist during the college years.

1. Wake Me Up When September Ends, Green Day

If you didn’t hear this on TV, you definitely heard some band trying to cover it at college competitions.

2. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana

This song is the evergreen ‘rock out with you socks out’ anthem.

3. Losing My Religion, R.E.M.

This was the perennial choice for any car ride in the night time or end of party meltdown.

4. Paradise City, Guns N’ Roses

If you haven’t sung along to the chorus of this song in college, then that’s unfortunate.

5. Wonderwall, Oasis

This is another one of those “oh no, not again!” songs. Still good though.

6. All The Small Things, Blink 182

Any guy who doesn’t remember the cover art to this seminal album, go check it out right now! (Hint: Hot chick)

7. Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd

It’s impossible for this song to not evoke any emotions, even today.

8. Sweet Child O’ Mine, Guns N’ Roses

Every college kid heard this and proceeded to blast this song from every possible sound system, even their grandmom’s gramophone.

9. Song 2, Blur

Try to stop yourself from going “Whoo Hoo!” with this song. You will fail… happily.

10. Californication, Red Hot Chili Peppers

The video was as much a part of this song as the music itself.

11. O Sanam, Lucky Ali

Yeh toh abhi bhi MTV pe aata hai!

12. Knocking On Heaven’s Door, Bob Dylan

A lot of people love the GnR version but most of us knew that Dylan sang the original.

13. Pehla Nasha, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander

14. Dhoom Pichuk Dhoom, Euphoria

If a punch could have a sound, this song would be it.

15. Baby Got Back, Sir Mix A Lot

One episode of Friends with Rachel singing this song and BAM! Suddenly, it was on everyone’s playlist.

16. Tubthumping, Chumbawumba

This song is still an instant party starter, even if you’re sitting in office!

17. Hotel California, Eagles

No classic quite like this one!

18. Hey Jude, The Beatles

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve sung along to the end of this song and it’s always been fun!

19. Nothing Else Matters, Metallica

23. Sweet Home Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd

The guitar riff. Uff!

24. Born To Be Wild, Steppenwolf

25. Back In Black, ACDC

Trying to sing along to this is the equivalent of running a saw through your vocal cords. Super fun though.

26. Winds Of Change, The Scorpions

27. The Scientist, Coldplay

28. It’s My Life, Bon Jovi

That intro. Nothing like it!

29. Temple Of The King, Rainbow

30. Summer Of 69, Bryan Adams

There’s obviously a million other songs that occupied every college goer’s mp3 player, but these are the ones that stayed with us the longest, and for good measure.
