The birth of a girl child is still not welcomed in many parts of our country. In a unique attempt to make people aware to not consider girls as a burden, Bengaluru has decided that first female baby born in the New Year at a civic hospital will receive free education till under-graduation.

The decision was made by Bengaluru Mayor R. Sampath Raj. Civic hospital health officials will record the time of female child born after December 31st midnight and in the first hour or early hours of January 1st before declaring the winner.

Mayor R. Sampath Raj told IANS:

The first girl child born in the New Year (January 1) through a normal delivery at any civic hospital in the city would get free education up to degree level in a college so that girls are not considered a burden.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will also deposit ₹5 lakh in a joint bank account of its Commissioner and the first born girl child. The interest will be utilised later for her education.

The mayor further added that only girl child born through natural delivery will be given this reward. He said:

Since a Caesarean-section birth can be induced any time, civic doctors have decided to reward only the girl child born through the natural process.
