At least 26 haven been killed and over a hundred injured as a portion of an under- construction flyover collapsed on a congested road intersection near Girish Park in Kolkata on March 31. It’s Hyderabad-based builder, IVRCL blamed it ‘an act of god’.

But there are many such ‘acts of god’ taking place across the country. According to NCRB data, an average of seven people die in building collapses in the country every day.

In the five years between 2010 to 2014, over 13,000 people have died in accidents due to structures collapsing.

In fact the year 2011 witnessed the most casualties due to such incidents.

Out of the 13, 000 deaths, over 4,900 have been due to collapse of residential buildings or homes.

And among the states, Uttar Pradesh did the worst, with 2065 people dying over five years due to the collapse of building structures. Incidentally, West Bengal had the least number of deaths due to this type of accident in the specified time period.
