A nine-month-old baby’s finger split into two in an apparent accident at her daycare centre in Gurgaon, last week.

9-month-old Ayana was dropped off in the morning at her daycare, Intellitots Creche, and Activity Centre in Fortis Hospital, Gurgaon on May 19 by her parents. Shortly after they left, they received a call saying that there had been an emergency and that they should rush back to the hospital.

Ayana’s mother, Bhawana Rastogi gives a detailed account of the horror they encountered in a Facebook post.

The accident took place around 10.30 am when Ayana was being carried out of the diaper room by the maid. Rastogi writes, that the maid shut the door without realizing that the baby’s hand was still on it.

“As I write this post, my baby lies beside me with her left arm immobilized and her left-hand ring finger amputated as the Intellitots maid apparently shut the door on my daughter while changing the diaper while her finger got caught between the door.

No one imagine (sic) what it was to see her screaming and all in blood with her finger piece separated.”

“We had a major surgery on 19th May at Medanta and we don’t know what will happen. This will be repeated by another one this Thursday and this procedure will get repeated maybe twice every week for 6 weeks.”

Bhawna added that when the requested for a CCTV footage of the incident, the founders of Intellitot, Pooja Goyal and Shivani Kapoor allegedly told the parents that there was no footage available as the cameras had “accidentally” got unplugged at that very moment.

Bhawna added that “the maid who banged the door on my daughter had never shut the door before in the past and they don’t know how it could have happened.”

While Bhawna says that they have taken the matter to the Police as well as the concerned authorities, Fortis in its official statement said, “This is regarding an unfortunate incident that caused injury to a 9-month-old child at Intellitots, located inside our Gurgaon facility. Intellitots is a day care facility, which has rented out a part of the FMRI facility to run a crèche. Fortis Healthcare has strict protocols and processes to deal with every sentinel event and this incident, even though it involves a third party, will be dealt with the same level of severity. We have started an enquiry into the matter and have served a show-cause notice to the vendor and apt punitive action will be taken.”
