It seems pretty unbelievable but reports are doing the rounds that India may soon get its own Times Square.
The intersection point of Bengaluru’s Residency Road and Brigade Road is all set to undergo a dramatic refurbishment which entails revamping it into the Bengaluru Square, on the lines of the famous Times Square – a major tourist and entertainment centre in New York City!
BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) officials are planning to transform the junction into a prominent tourist destination in the business district. Presently, the place is adorned with a war memorial.
The plan was announced by Mayor R Sampath Raj. He told TOI:
We want the city to have a Bengaluru Square similar to Times Square. Bengaluru is fast becoming a global city, and there should be something to celebrate that. We have asked Swati Ramanathan, the brain behind TenderSURE, to start working on a detailed project report.
MLA NA Haris told TOI that since MG Road and Church Street are popular tourist spots, the residents of the city demanded that it should be converted into a walkers’ zone like Times Square.
We will convey their demand to the authorities concerned. Church Street will also have easy access to the upcoming pod taxi service,” he said.
