A  labourer named Birbal told DNA

“There were four policemen who took us to the police station after we refused to pay the bribe asked by them. They brutally beat us,”

According to some reports, after the cops beat the two men to death, the remaining workers thrashed the cops.

The police initially claimed that the men had died due to drowning. But the post mortem reports revealed that injuries due to assault had caused their deaths.

Their bodies were discovered dumped in a river, possibly in order to make it look like a case of drowning. Their deaths were reported by their family, who lodged a complaint against the cops with Ghiror Police.

Angry protests over the killing erupted in Mainpuri, with protesters assaulting two cops on duty on Saturday.

The two deceased, Dilip and Pankaj Yadav, were cousins.

The FIR was lodged against police chowki in charge Udaiveer Singh, head constable Girish Chandra, constables Gaurab Singh and Vinay Gautam, homeguards Viresh Kumar and Ram Khilari and brick kiln owners Sunil Verma and Pramod Dube, PTI reported.

They have been charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy), Superintendent of Police Deo Ranjan said.
