A 77-year-old debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide at Khakurdi village in Nashik district of Maharashtra.

Supadu Bhika Pawar set himself ablaze in the backyard of his house after building his own `pyre’ and sitting in it, said the sub-divisional magistrate Ajay More.

When some local people saw smoke coming out from behind his house, they rushed in and took him to the civil hospital. However, he was declared dead on arrival.

Pawar had taken farm loan in the name of his wife and was finding it difficult to pay it off, family members said.

Khakurdi police are conducting further probe.
