According to Alla Morozova, kennel owner in Novosibirsk who shared Maru’s story with The Siberian Times, Maru was sold to her owners in Krasnoyarsk when she was only 5 months old. 6 months later, the owners wanted to return her to the kennel, the reason being allergies.

This sweet doggo named Maru had only spent 6 months with her new owners when they sent her back to the kennel. She then travelled almost 200 kms to get back to them. This is her story

The owners informed Alla about the situation and arrangements were made to send Maru back to Novosibirsk. She was sent back on a train, with an attendant to look after her at all times. Some 200 kms into the journey, when the train had a halt at small station near Achinsk, the poor girl had a panic attack. Alla said “she was frightened without her owners”, so she managed to break out of the train and ran away into the darkness into the taiga (snow forest)

The attendant called Alla, who then informed Maru’s owners in the hopes that they would go look for the dog – but her owners didn’t want any responsibility. For them, as soon as Maru left them, she wasn’t their burden anymore. Alla said,

That angered me. The owners were not upset at all, like, well, the dog is lost and that’s all right. They gave the dog away and the load fell off their shoulders.

Alla put in all her efforts to look for Maru, posting messages and distributing leaflets. Maru was finally found 2 and a half days later, in Krasnoyarsk – the town of her owners. The distance covered was almost 200 kms.

Alla explained Maru’s journey, saying she had travelled all the way back to look for her house. Alla was surprised at this feat.

She had walked and run for two and a half days. Luckily neither bears ate her, nor wolves chewed her up. She was lame, her paws were broken. The pads were damaged. Her muzzle was broken – she was even in tears. She did not run to Novosibirsk, she wanted to go back where she lived. It is surprising that she went the right way. Geographically, she had no reference points at all. In the city she used to walk only in the yard, she never went anywhere else. And to make her away through the wild taiga, it is an amazing case.

Maru was united with her mother and father in Novosibirsk soon after, and is undergoing treatment now.
