Earlier yesterday, Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the government has decided to put a ban on e-cigarettes because of the health hazards associated with it.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman: The Union Cabinet has given approval to ban e-cigarettes. It means the production, manufacturing, import/export, transport, sale, distribution, storage and advertising related to e-cigarettes are banned. pic.twitter.com/qayCrQHPZp

She justified the government’s stance by claiming that:
These e-cigarettes come in over 150 flavours, and it’s become a fashion. The reason is it’s odourless. However, the smoke that is exhaled by the users has a high-level of residual nicotine in it and those who passively inhale them are also affected.
However, netizens resorted to Twitter to contemplate why the government has only banned e-cigarettes and not beedis and tobacco cigarettes.
Why not ban all type of cigarettes ..? 🤔

My Kidney will take better decisions than Nirmala Sitharaman’s brain #ecigarettes
Still trying to understand how #ecigarettes are more harmful than tobacco cigarettes, bidis, guthka. If one is banned then shouldn’t the others be too.??? Wonder which bright policy maker is going to try and justify this.. https://t.co/wh9vdTW7CH

Govt has banned e-cigarettes because they are injurious to health.

Cigarettes are still not banned because they are healthy for the Govt’s bank balance.#ecigarettes
Whoever I have met smoking #ecigarettes lately have told me how it is so much safer than the normal cigarette. For someone like me who has never smoked, it was an alluring proposition. Good it is banned

E-cigarettes banned, good. Very good. But curious why we don’t ban real cigarettes and beedis. Is the huge excise and GST collected more important than matters of public health? In that case why all this moral posturing?
— Pritish Nandy (@PritishNandy) September 18, 2019
Why just ban #ecigarettes?? Ban cigarettes too. Thousands if not more die every year due to smoking #cigarettes.
— StableInvestor.com (@StableInvestor) September 18, 2019

#ecigarettes were bad for health so govt banned it. Only if real #cigarettes or other #tobacco products were bad for health, govt would have banned it too. Poor Mukesh Harane died of Cancer caused by e-cigarettes.

E-Cigarettes help smokers quit smoking real cigarettes.
— Tanaya Patnaik (@tanaya_p) September 19, 2019
We ban E-Cigarettes.
E-Cigarettes are not more harmful than real cigarettes.
I understand, maybe it’s not possible to completely ban cigarettes. But why ban E-Cigarettes? #ecigarettes #ecigaretteban
Well, the lesser of the two evils is crucified.
