After campaigns like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Selfie with Daughter to boost the state’s dismal sex ratio, the Haryana government has come up with another unique initiative this Republic Day to try and encourage people to have girl children in the state.

The Haryana Education Department has sent invitations to the families of all infant girls to be present for the Republic Day function in their locality, says a report in the Indian Express.

The invitations have been issued in the names of the infant girls and the families attending the function will get front row seats at the event, reports India Today

And the flag hoisting at each of the events will be done by the most educated girl in a village.

The girl who hoists the flag will also become the member of the school management committee for a year.

Nearly two lakh families have received the invites in the name of the girl child in their family.

An official of the Education Department told India Today:

“We wanted to make the parents feel that it was because of their daughters they were receiving respect. We want the perception about the girl child to change.”

A similar movement for the girl child is also being taken in the villages of Gujarat. A circular was issued in every government school that the most educated girl in a village will have the opportunity to hoist the flag, the Better India mentioned in their report.
