With 33 spots (as opposed to 16 in the previous year) India has more than doubled its representation to become the third most represented nation in the rankings, reports Hindustan Times. 

• Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru was ranked 27th in the list of top 300 Asian universities in 2017 and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay became the second highest ranked university from the country by clinching the 42nd spot.
• Tamil Nadu-based Veltech University was among 17 universities that made their debut in the ranking this year by securing a surprise 43rd spot. 
• IIT Kanpur has moved up places from the 101-110 band in the previous year to 63rd spot in the current year.
• The other top ranked universities from India are IIT Delhi at 54th spot and IIT Madras at 62nd spot.

“India’s strong performance is partly due to country recognition of the importance of participating in global bench-marking exercises but lower down the table, several Indian universities have slipped places because of increased competition,” The Editor Phil Baty told Livemint. 

The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings is a ranking of Asia’s best 300 universities from 24 countries, including Japan, South Korea, India and Israel and uses 13 performance indicators, such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook to rank the universities.
