‘Leading by example‘. ‘Exemplary’. This is how some on Twitter and in media described the move even as we wondered what the real point of the visit was. Was it meant to be a message to those who have been standing in lines and complaining?
Whether Hiraben visited the bank simply out of curiosity or genuine need is not known. But critics came down hard on Modi calling the move a political gimmick, criticising the prime minister for “pushing” her aged mother into doing this.
‘Photo-op’. ‘Using mother as political prop’. Here’s how Modi’s rivals and critics panned the move
Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi CM tweeted:
मोदीजी ने राजनीति के लिए माँ को लाइन में लगा ठीक नहीं किया। कभी लाइन में लगना हो तो मैं ख़ुद लाइन में लगूँगा, माँ को लाइन में नहीं लगाउँगा pic.twitter.com/wEO1TYATO7

Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha launched a scathing attack:
We grew up with different values and respect for elders. No family/friend would have ever pushed his mother to stand in a queue. #Shameless

Some other users also questioned Modi over his mother’s visit:
Modi: mother, things are going badly, we need to wheel you out
Mother: but my arthritis!?Modi: soldiers are dying at the border!!— Vinay Aravind (@vinayaravind) November 15, 2016
Modi sending his 94 y/o mother out to queue is cruelty, not sacrifice. Note it was Rahul who queued, he didn’t ask Sonia to do it for him.

One of the least attractive things about Modi is how he seemingly uses his elderly mother as a political prop https://t.co/bMOiSSfYOn
