Shinde’s death came a little over a week after he was brutally assaulted in the north western suburb of Khar on August 23. 

Shinde had stopped a juvenile driving a motorcycle without a helmet at a petrol pump in Khar and when he sought the papers for the vehicle, the youth called his elder brother. The juvenile reportedly didn’t have any of the required documents. 

The constable and the youth were also arguing about the documents when the youth’s elder brother Ahmed Qureshi turned up. 

Qureshi allegedly used a wooden stick to hit the constable on the back of his head, and the two brothers then fled from the spot after Shinde collapsed.  

The 50-year-old constable was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but remained unconscious and passed away on Wednesday. 

The juvenile and Qureshi was arrested on the same day of the incident. The duo were initially charged with attempt to murder but the duo have now been charged with murder. Both are presently in custody. 

However, the constable’s death has also become a political issue with the Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena targeting the government over Shinde’s death since he was a Maharashtrian, reports the Times of India. The report also says that the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was heckled by locals when he visited the constable’s family. 

Shinde is survived by his wife and two children.
