A 21-year-old slipped into a pond and died while playing Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) on his mobile phone on Tuesday, August 27.
The youth from Vasai had promised his mother that he’ll come back soon after finishing a game but did not turn up, reports Mid-Day.
The incident came to light when the boy’s mother filed a missing person complaint with the Waliv police.
The deceased Akash Dixit was playing PUBG on his mobile phone by the pond near his house at Dhaniv Vasai Phata.
His body was found floating in the pond on Wednesday, August 28.
On seeing his son’s dead body, the mother too jumped in the pond and was apparently drowning.
Locals along with personnel from the fire brigade had to step in to rescue the woman and prevent her from drowning. Akash’s body was then sent for a post-mortem.
Speaking to Mid-Day, Senior PI Vijay Chogle said:
Jha’s family members are daily wage labourers. He always used to play games on his mobile phone and stay up all night. On the day of the incident, he was so engrossed in the game while sitting on the edge of the pond, that he didn’t realise when he slipped in. When he did not return home till morning, his mother started searching for him. His phone, too, was switched off.
While the family was in shock and in no condition to give an elaborated statement, the police told media that an accidental death report has been registered.
More reports are awaited as the investigation is underway.
